Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca announced on Thursday that the amount of one million lei from the Government Reserve Fund will be allocated to swimmer David Popovici.
“Today during the government meeting we made the decision to recognize the performance of our athlete David Popovici and in this way we decided that, being an exceptional performance, we should have a proper recognition and we decided to allocate it from the Reserve Fund of the Government an amount of one million lei “, Ciucă declared after the government meeting, according to Agerpres.
Romanian swimmer David Popovici, aged 17, won two gold medals at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest, in the 100 m freestyle on Wednesday, and in the 200 m freestyle on Monday, at which he also set a new world junior record.
Popovici is the second swimmer of all time to win gold in the 100 and 200m freestyle events at the same World Championships, after American Jim Montgomery, who did so in 1973 in Belgrade.
