The many efforts made by the Western Balkan countries must lead to their accession to the European Union, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday before a summit of EU leaders with their Western Balkan counterparts. in Brussels, informs the German news agency dpa, quoted by Agerpres.
“For almost 20 years, the countries and citizens of the Western Balkan countries have been waiting for the opportunity to become members of the European Union,” Scholz said.
The German Federal Chancellor pointed out that Northern Macedonia has changed its name in hopes of becoming a member of the EU.
Olaf Scholz said Germany “feels responsible” for ensuring that the countries of the Western Balkans have “the opportunity to successfully implement their European prospects”.
According to the federal chancellor, it is “extremely important that this becomes a credible promise” given the frustration expressed by leaders in the region.
At the summit on Thursday, the Albanian prime minister said Bulgaria’s blockade of Northern Macedonia and Albania’s progress towards joining the European Union was “a disgrace”, accusing EU leaders of “powerlessness”. “It is a shame that one NATO country, Bulgaria, is holding captive two other NATO countries, namely Albania and Northern Macedonia, in the midst of a bloody war taking place near Europe, with the other 26 EU countries sitting quietly in a terrible Rama said, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
