A new strong earthquake occurred in Romania, Tuesday evening, May 23. Residents of the region have panicked since the beginning of the current week due to tectonic phenomena. Find out in the lines below where the earthquake occurred and what magnitude it registered on the Richter scale.
A new strong earthquake in Romania
For 200 years, no earthquake has been recorded in a region of Romania. However, the last few hours have changed the perspective of the locals on this phenomenon. On Monday, May 22, the residents of Arad panicked because of an earthquake that registered a magnitude of 4.9 degrees on the Richter scale.
“On 22.05.2023, 20:46:43 (Romanian time), a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of ML 4.9 occurred in BANAT, ARAD, at a depth of 15 km”, reported the representatives of the National Institute for Research and Development of Physics Earth (INFP).
The event produced at the beginning of the current week was followed by six other aftershocks that caused concern among local residents. However, experts in the field say that the Arad seismic zone is known as a tectonically active zone, yet it generates rare earthquakes.
Not being used to such phenomena, people can get scared, just as it happened on Tuesday evening, May 23, when a new earthquake occurred in the region. The current circumstances do not indicate a major danger, however INFP specialists claim.
What magnitude was Tuesday’s earthquake?
On Tuesday evening, May 23, the region was again affected by the earthquake, according to an announcement made by the INFP management. Around 19:00, an earthquake with a magnitude of just over 4 degrees on the Richter scale occurred in Banat.
“On 23.05.2023, 19:15:29 (Romanian time), a moderate earthquake of ML 4.1 magnitude occurred in BANAT, ARAD, at a depth of 15 km. The earthquake occurred 17 km SE of Arad, 43 km NE of Timișoara, 72 km SE of Bekescsaba, 92 km N of Reșita”, according to a statement issued by INFP representatives.
Until the time of writing this material, no information has been made public regarding calls through the emergency number 112 or situations in which material damage or human casualties are reported. Moreover, even after the earthquake on Monday, no such problems were reported.
