It seems that the Romanians are leading a ranking made among the EU27 states regarding the request for citizenship of another state.
According to the latest data presented in an infographic made by the Social Monitor, a project of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Romania, the EU27 states cumulatively naturalized over 825,000 new citizens in 2021. We are leaders in this chapter! Concretely, it seems that we are the first among the citizens of an EU27 state to apply for the citizenship of another EU27 state.
What is the Social Monitor? “It is a project that aims to present Romanian social realities in numbers and data to encourage informed public debate. Digits?! Figures are for statisticians, for economists! Not true, the numbers are for everyone, provided they are presented in an accessible and attractive manner. This is what Social Monitor is trying to do.
What does the Social Monitor do for us? It helps us confront our own perceptions and put them to the empirical test. Perceptions are most often influenced by personal experience, the environment we live in, and the dominant public discourse. The Social Monitor helps us better understand the surrounding reality and the problems facing Romania. To all those interested, the Social Monitor offers the possibility of forming documented opinions, based on data and information from official sources”, note those from the project.
What does the latest analysis regarding the granting of citizenships say about us, as Romanians
It should be noted that almost 90% of the new citizens were granted to people from non-EU countries, most of them with a difficult economic or political situation. Here we are talking about states whose problems have made the world go round in recent years, and representative ones are, for reference, Syria or Albania.
Incidentally, three states, namely Syria, Morocco and Albania, together account for approximately 25% of the new citizenships granted. By comparison, in relation to the population, the data show that Romanians represent more than 25% of the citizens of the European Union who apply for the citizenship of another member state.
