The executive approved, on Wednesday, the Memorandum between the Government of Romania, through the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Government of the United States of America, through the Department of Internal Security, the Immigration and Customs Service, the Internal Security Investigations Agency, for the initiation of negotiations for the establishment in Romania of a Cross-Border Criminal Investigation Unit (TCIU). The unit that will be established after the creation of the necessary legal framework will constitute a center within which the entire South-East European region will be able to be monitored, with the aim of reducing the criminal phenomenon that manifests itself in this area, the Ministry of the Interior says, in a press release quoted by News.ro.
According to the quoted source, the TCIU’s objective is the destruction of criminal organizations, based on the joint efforts of the operative teams that act to arrest and incriminate criminals and by facilitating the exchange of information and conducting bilateral investigations for crimes related to Romania, the USA and other countries in the South-Eastern European region.
“The activity that will take place in the Center will greatly contribute to strengthening cooperation in the field of combating drug trafficking, human trafficking, financial fraud, economic crime, as well as intensifying the exchange of data with the American authorities regarding illegal migration. I am convinced that this Center will contribute to solving a much larger number of cross-border crime cases and will be a real HUB for cooperation with neighboring states”, said Lucian Bode, according to the mentioned source.
