There is mourning in the art world after the “Queen of Rock’n’Roll”, Tina Turner, passed away on Wednesday, May 24th. The announcement was made by her spokesperson, who explained that the vocalist, one of the biggest and most charismatic on the international stage, had a peaceful death at her home in Kusnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland.
“With her, the world loses a music legend and role model,” added the spokesperson.
Tina Turner was one of rock music’s most beloved singers, known for her hits including ‘The Best’, ‘Proud Mary’, ‘Private Dancer’ and ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’. He has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, being one of the top-charting artists in the United States of America.
She won 12 competitive Grammy Awards and was the first black woman and artist to grace the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, which ranked her among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
She rose to stardom in the 1960s with ex-husband Ike Turner, featuring the River Deep classic Mountain High in their repertoire.
The domestic abuse Ike subjected his wife to was documented in a 1993 Hollywood biopic starring Angela Bassett, which won three Academy Awards.
Her life story was also immortalized in a popular West End show that is still running.
