Romania shook again in the evening of Thursday, May 25. The earthquake occurred on the territory of our country at 18:47 local time, at a depth of 87 km. Here is the area in which it occurred and how many degrees it had, according to the official statement of the National Institute for Earth Physics.
A new earthquake in Romania
The National Institute for Earth Physics reported a new earthquake on Thursday, May 25, in Romania. The seismic movement took place in the Vrancea area, at 18:47, with a magnitude of 3.3 degrees on the Richter scale.
“On May 25, 2023, at 18:47:12 (Romanian local time), a weak earthquake with a magnitude of ml 3.3 occurred in the seismic zone of Vrancea, Vrancea, at a depth of 87 km,” the National Institute reported for Earth Physics.
The tectonic movement occurred near the following cities: 39 km W of Focșani, 69 km N of Buzău, 71 km E of Sfântu-Gheorghe, 85 km E of Brașov, 91 km S of Bacău and 92 km SW of Bârlad.
Surface earthquake in Arad
In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, May 22 to 23, there was another surface earthquake, at 00:24 local time, with a magnitude of 3.2 degrees, this time in the Crişana area, Arad county.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 8 kilometers near the following cities: 23 km east of Arad, 48 km northeast of Timisoara, 74 km southeast of Bekescsaba and 92 km north of Resita.
It came after no less than 11 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging between 2 and 4.7 on the Richter scale occurred in Arad County. The strongest in this area occurred on Tuesday, May 22, with a magnitude of 4.7 and 4.4 on the Richter scale, although seismologists initially announced a magnitude of 4.9 and 4.3, respectively.
“There are witnesses who told me that they saw the spire of the Radna Orthodox Church swaying, but fortunately it did not collapse and so far no damage has been reported in Lipova. I’ve already gone to scout the neighborhoods, to talk to people and see if there are any problems.
All I can say so far is that in the Lipova area, where I understand the epicenter was, I, personally, have never felt such a strong earthquake. It was in two short halves, with a break of a few seconds between them, that’s how I felt”, said the mayor of Lipova.
