The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) admitted a complaint filed by the ACCEPT Association and several LGBT couples against the Romanian state, alleging a violation of Article 8 of the Convention of the Court, which provides for “the right to respect for private and family life”. Thus, the ECtHR obliges the Romanian state to adopt legislation to recognize same-sex couples. Klaus Iohannis reacted, on Wednesday, to this decision, saying that “it is a complicated issue for Romania”, which the Parliament will have to deal with. Separately, the Romanian Patriarchy said that “civil partnership is a surrogate for marriage and a destructive element of the spiritual and moral order in society.” In this context, a survey shows that 38.7% of Romanians say they are very little affected by the ECHR decision, while 22.2% consider themselves very affected by it.
Regarding the distribution by gender, 37.2% of respondents who say they are very little affected by the ECHR decision are women, while 40.35 are men.
Regarding the distribution by age group, 54.2% of the respondents in the 18-29 age category say they are very little affected by the ECHR decision, while 30.9% of the respondents in the 65+ age category consider themselves very much affected by the ECHR’s decision on Tuesday.
17.2% of people with higher education declare themselves very affected by the ECHR decision.
