Officially unveiled in 2020, the development of the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has had many twists and turns and is now giving its news.
The game has been rebooted
In an article published on its site, Ubisoft explains that the game will not be present at the Ubisoft Forward conference, and we learn that the project has been rebooted. As a reminder, it is now in the hands of Ubisoft Montreal, the studio that created the original game in 2003.
The game’s producer, Jean-Francois Naud, specifies that the project is currently in the design phase and that players should not expect to hear any news about the title this year:
Today, we’re building the team, setting priorities, building prototypes, testing stuff, and thinking about how to incorporate community feedback into development. It’s still an early stage, and players shouldn’t expect to hear more about the game this year, but rest assured that we’re putting all our strength and heart into this project.
Reworked combat, movement and story
Michael McIntyre, Game Director at Ubisoft Montreal, explains that it’s important that the studio offers a real remake, rather than a remaster, and that one of the cornerstones of the original game is the way the prince moves.
The studio is therefore working on this aspect, but also on other key points of the game, such as its fights and its story, to offer a quality remake:
Movement is an important aspect for us, but combat will receive a similar treatment, due to the evolution of movement. And when the team digs into the elements that need to be refined, even the story – the story will stay true to itself. But the way it’s presented, the new ways stories have been told in games over the last 20 years, allow us to be a little more nuanced and refined in how we run the story.
The least we can say is that the game now seems to be in good hands, and we now hope that development can go smoothly.
Recall that the Prince of Persia remake was originally planned for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC as well as Xbox Series X|S and PS5, but plans could change as the project progresses. We will obviously be on the lookout for new information about him.
