In Romania in recent years, the number of road users using electric scooters has increased aggressively. In addition to those that are rented, many are purchased by ordinary Romanians to move more easily through the chaos of the city. Users of these means of transport will be fined more and more often.
A new legislative project hopes to expand the powers of the Local Police officers to include the detection of contraventions of the owners of electric scooters. Obviously, this process will also involve the imposition of fines. Until now, this process could only be carried out by the Traffic Police. Basically, we are talking about an amendment to the Local Police Law which, at this time, is in the senate.
What is happening with scooter owners in Romania
If the legislative amendment will be adopted, the local Police could be empowered to detect and sanction contraventions, if they were committed by the drivers of electric scooters. Currently, these police officers have the right to fine only pedestrians, cyclists, drivers of mopeds or carts, but not scooter riders.
The main argument behind this legislative initiative is related to the fact that scooter users represent a major danger to pedestrians, but also to other road users, an aspect that is reflected in the large number of accidents in which scooter drivers are involved.
Globally, scooter users have created a lot of resentment among other road users, to the extent that their rental has been restricted in major cities such as Rome, Oslo, Stockholm and Lisbon. Other metropolises have completely banned their use on the streets, as happened in Barcelona or Montreal. Paris is the latest example of a major capital that has a problem with scooters to the point where the use of the rental ones will be banned from August 31.
