The part of the fridge you never clean
Keeping the fridge clean is not a very difficult task. However, most housewives limit themselves to cleaning only the shelves and drawers of the household appliance, forgetting an extremely important surface of it. There is one area of the fridge that often goes uncleaned for months at a time.
If we were to make a list of ignored surfaces when it comes to cleaning tasks, the drip tray under the fridge would probably be at the top. Did you know that under the appliance there is a tray where the water drains, following the defrosting process? If you don’t clean it, you risk facing many problems.
Stagnant water in the drip tray under the refrigerator, if not evaporated as quickly as it accumulates, can overflow and damage the appliance. Even the floor or parquet under the refrigerator can be affected. If you think your kitchen smells musty and you haven’t discovered the cause yet, you might want to check the refrigerator.
The drip tray under the fridge is not a real danger as long as it doesn’t have a lot of standing water and mess in it. Each time it fills, it must be emptied, otherwise the appliance will malfunction.
How to clean the refrigerator drain pan
After emptying the water from the drain or drip tray, it is recommended to wash it very well. In this sense, you can only use warm water and detergent or dish soap. If the surface is affected by an unpleasant odor or mold, prepare a solution of one part bleach or vinegar and two parts water and pour it into the tray.
Scrub the refrigerator drain pan with gentle strokes without putting too much pressure on it. Leave the solutions on for up to 15 minutes, then rinse and replace. If the tray cannot be manually removed from under the refrigerator, use an antibacterial wipe or cloth to wipe it.
On another note, if the drain pan isn’t under the fridge, try checking the appliance manual. In it you will find explained where each component is located and how you can manipulate it, if you need it.
