Mircea Geoană, brother-in-law of Ionuț Costea, former president of Exim Bank, sentenced to prison for corruption, had a first reaction after Costea was prosecuted for the execution of the sentence.
“Even in complicated moments, democratic values must prevail. Without exception, court decisions must be respected and carried out. Each of us is responsible for the decisions made. Mihaela and I will continue to be with our grandchildren and offer them the support they need in these difficult moments”, Mircea Geoană, Deputy Secretary General of NATO, said on Saturday.
The former president of Eximbank Ionuţ Costea was prosecuted on Friday, after he was definitively sentenced to 6 years in prison in the case of the rehabilitation of the Bucharest-Constanța railway. Ionuț Costea did not surrender and was not found at home.
“Against the person in question, the Bucharest Court issued on 26.05.2023 a warrant for the execution of the prison sentence, being sentenced to 6 years in prison for committing the crime of bribery in the form of complicity”, is the announcement posted on the Police website Romanians, under the heading “Followed persons”.
“Based on art. 396 para. (1) rap. to art. 16 para. (1) lit. f) from the Code of Criminal Procedure, orders the termination of the criminal process for the crime of influence-peddling provided. of art. 291 of the Criminal Code rap. to art. 6 of Law no. 78/2000, with the application of art. 5 of the Criminal Code, as a result of the fulfillment of the limitation period for criminal liability, according to art. 154 lit. c) from the Criminal Code. Reduces the amount of the penalty for the crime of complicity in bribery, prev. of art. 48 rap. to art. 289 para. (1) of the Criminal Code, with the application of art. 6 and art. 7 para. (1) lit. a) from Law no. 78/2000 and art. 5 of the Criminal Code, from 7 years in prison to 6 years in prison”, the court established, the initial sentence being 7 years in prison.
