The mountains of Romania are home to countless landscapes and story-telling places, it is hard to imagine that there could be such beauties of nature in our country. Find out what is the hidden resort in the Carpathian Mountains that very few people know about.
In the Retezat Massif, you can find the Râușor resort, which appeared there on the former ruins of a worker’s settlement, right in the heart of nature. The authorities in the area want this place to become a skiing area in the future.

At the beginning of winter, the thin white blanket settles on the peaks of the massif, while the owners of the huts at the foot of the mountain prepare to welcome their first guests. During the summer, however, everything is a sea of trees that adorn the area in green, so that later, in autumn, the trees in different colors offer a pastel that takes your breath away. The number of guesthouses and cabins in Râușor increases from one year to the next, the authorities already envisioning at least one slope there in the future.
“This will be developed, after the concession of the land, by auction, on the land occupied by a wooded pasture, near the current slope in the Râușor resort. The works, which have received the necessary approvals to be put out to auction, will take place in the Sustainable Development Zone of the national park, where such investments in the development of tourism are allowed”, according to the mayor of the commune of Râu de Mori, Flavius Dilertea.
The Raușor resort in the Carpathian Mountains is unique and you will be able to ski in the future
However, this still has to wait until the slopes in Râușor are extended and the infrastructure modernized. With the help of the rehabilitation program carried out by the Hunedoara County Council, there are works on the water and sewage network in the area, wanting a full-fledged resort.
There are 100 accommodation units in the resort, as well as slopes, which occupy a large part of the area of the Retezat Sustainable Development Zone. The “buffer zone” is found above the resort, the one of sustainable conservation that continues with the areas of integral protection and the strict one, where human interventions are prohibited.
The Râușor resort begins its story at the beginning of the 70s, at the time when it was just a wild place in the mountains and where the barracks of the workers and miners who were part of the hydropower development project on the Mare River – Retezat and the Gura Apelor dam appeared like mushrooms after the rain .

After they left, the colony was demolished, and a decade later the first tourist complex was built, which also included a motel, intended for the employees of the Hunedoara Steel Works. That’s when the Hunedoara Rescue Service came into existence, and the volunteers set up a 250-meter slope, as well as a ski lift, the first in Retezat.
After the Revolution, the mayor’s office of the commune of Râu de Mori began to divide the land at Râușor, selling it to those who wanted holiday homes and guesthouses. At that time, the authorities wanted to build more slopes that would count nine kilometers of ski slopes that would descend from an altitude of 2,000 meters. Nowadays, the resort starts to come alive especially in the cold season.
