Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin are old allies, and Turkey has adopted a more neutral position towards Moscow in the Ukraine War than its NATO allies.

“We have concluded the second round of the presidential election in favor of our nation. We will lead the country for the next five years. God willing, we will deserve your trust,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his supporters atop a bus in his home district of Istanbul.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, 69, defied opinion polls and won by nearly 5 percent over rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the first round of voting on May 14.
However, Recep Erdogan obtained less than 50% of the votes needed to be able to win a new mandate in the first round. Also, on May 14, general voting attendance it was 87.04%, with a level of 88.9% in Turkey and 49.4% abroad.
