Electric scooters could be banned in Bucharest, with the capital’s mayor’s office proposing that citizens vote in a referendum whether they agree with it or not.
In 2022, in the Capital, due to accidents involving electric scooters, 13 people lost their lives and another 200 were seriously injured.
They want to organize a referendum
Thus, the Capital City Hall is thinking of organizing a referendum, through which the people of Bucharest can determine whether or not they want to give up this increasingly used means of transport.
In most cases, the citizens of Bucharest believe that electric scooters help to fight pollution, but at the same time ensure better mobility for those who use them around the city.
Even so, the residents of the Capital recognize that, in the absence of a clear regulation, those who use electric scooters are exposed to great dangers.
Parisians voted to ban electric scooters
Also this year, the residents of Pais voted, following a referendum, to ban electric scooters from the streets of the French capital.
The Highway Code was amended in 2022, so it provides clear sanctions for those who travel on electric scooters.
What are the obligations of electric scooter riders?
According to the changes, any person who drives an electric scooter or a bicycle without lighting means can be fined.
“Driving a bicycle or an electric scooter on public roads without means of lighting and reflective-fluorescent devices in working condition at night”, the new law states.
Crossing the red traffic light, sanctioned by law
In the same law it is also stated that it will be a contravention and sanctioned with the fine provided for in the III-th class of sanctions, the movement of electric scooters or bicycles on the highway or crossing the red traffic light, failure to respect railway signals or signals and the directions of the traffic policeman.
Fines for driving electric scooters under the influence of alcohol
Also, a person under the influence of alcoholic beverages is not allowed to get on the electric scooter or bicycle. If they are stopped by the police and it is found that they have broken the law, they are liable to a fine between 870 and 1160 lei.
Last but not least, there is another project by which the parking of electric scooters in prohibited places would be sanctioned with fines between 200-400 lei.
