Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă presented, on Wednesday, at the start of the government meeting, the offer for the striking teachers. The Prime Minister says that at 19:00 he will have a new meeting with the union leaders where he will find out if the teachers agree with the Executive’s proposal. This includes an increase of 1,000 lei gross from June 1 and the phased increase in salaries starting next year.
“After the meeting in Cotroceni, I had a meeting with the union leaders. I thank them for the way we were able to agree together a proposal to end the education labor dispute, and we have agreed to pass an Emergency Ordinance tomorrow to ensure salary increase by 1,000 gross lei, and for non-teaching staff with 400 gross lei per month. We have agreed that in this document we will provide setting the salary of the beginning teaching staff at the level of the average salary in the economy. The increase of 1,000 lei is an advance, and starting from January 2024 this increase should be realized in stages over a maximum of three years, with an increase next year of 40% from the remaining amount as the difference between the current grid and the future grid,” the Prime Minister declared.
Nicolae Ciucă says at 7 p.m. he will have a new meeting with the union leaders.
“The union leaders will go to talk to the teaching staff and I express my conviction that they will show understanding and agree that the measures discussed today are the ones that can return the teachers to the classroom and the students to the banks, and tonight at 7 pm we will had a new date. It is certain that tomorrow we will have an exceptional government meeting in which we will approve this emergency ordinance,” the prime minister said.
The leaders of the main education union federations said after negotiations at Victoria Palace that they would put the government’s offer to the teachers, and it would be up to them to decide whether to accept it or not.
