On December 16, 2022, a tragedy occurred that marked an entire country. A horrifying accident occurred at the exit from Pașcani, when the 35 people transported could have suffered the worst. Fortunately, there were no deaths, but the fate of one of the victims managed to shake Romania. Alexia, a 15-year-old girl, lost her arms after the impact, and the one who found them on the ground was her brother. The hardest hours of her life followed, and in the end, an exceptional team of doctors from Iasi managed to replant her arms. Recently, Alexia was caught singing and dancing on the stage of a festival held in Ipotești commune.
Alexia’s destiny, rewritten with divine help
Only a miracle could save Alexia from an extremely difficult fate. Alexia is one of the passengers who were in the bus that overturned at the exit from Pașcani. Unfortunately, due to the difficult road conditions, the bus driver lost control of the steering wheel, and the inevitable happened: the bus carrying 35 people, students and teachers of the folklore group “Flori de măr” from Curteşti, overturned.
At that moment, the ordeal was unleashed. Everyone was scared, some children were crying, others were screaming, and Alexia was the only victim with the biggest consequences. One of his arms had been totally amputated, and another partially.
His brother, a year older, was his guardian angel. Seeing the condition of his sister, without arms, he mobilized and found her arm which was among the luggage.
“I saw her move and quickly picked her up. I slapped him twice across the face and he was ok. I saw it wasn’t a hand, then I saw her hand a few steps away from her. I saw that she opened the front window, I took her hand, I took her too, I quickly took her to the ambulance”, said Eric Tudose, Alexia’s brother.
Alexia underwent emergency surgery
Alexia went through the biggest trial of her life. After the tragedy, the child was taken to the hospital in Pașcani, where the doctors made every effort to save her, managing to arrange her transfer to Iasi, where an exceptional team of doctors entered into an extremely difficult operation, which it took 20 hours to try to replant Alexia’s arms. The intervention was a first in Romania, and fortunately, it was very successful. After that, six more interventions followed before Alexia was able to use her hands almost as before.
The doctor who coordinated the entire team of specialists who performed Alexia’s interventions is called Sidonia Susanu, who is also called the child’s “guardian angel”. The specialist claimed after the seven operations performed that this was the safest bilateral arm replantation ever performed in Europe.
Earlier this year, the doctor sent an emotional message expressing his joy at miraculously saving Alexia’s life.
“Hand in hand with Alexia in the New Year! Dear friends, thank you all for the amazing support you have given us in the last two weeks, for your thoughts and messages of encouragement and appreciation!
We are all happy that today Alexia, the little girl whose arms were replanted, could go home happy to her family. After a number of 7 surgical interventions, accumulating more than 50 hours, our team performed the only bilateral arm replantation ever reported in Europe, and the second in the world, Dr. Sidonia Susanu wrote on Facebook.
Recently, Alexia sang and danced in a concert organized in Ipotești commune, where hundreds of people were happy to see her again on stage. For the whole country, Alexia is an exceptional case, proof that miracles exist and are among us.
