Four injured as a result of a bombing in Belgorod, the governor of the region announces
UPDATE 09:30 Four people were injured in an attack on the town of Shebekino in the Belgorod region of southwestern Russia, governor Viacheslav Gladkov announced on Telegram, according to CNN.
“Two were rushed to a hospital in Belgorod,” Gladkov said. “The man has neck and back injuries, the condition is serious, the woman has arm injuries. The doctors are now carrying out all the necessary examinations.”
Eight apartment buildings, four houses, a school and two administrative buildings were damaged in the bombings, Gladkov said.
CNN cannot independently verify the governor’s claims.
Moscow: five dead and 16 injured in a Ukrainian bombing of the Luhansk region
UPDATE 08:30 Five people were killed and 16 wounded in a Ukrainian bombardment of the village of Karpaty in the Luhansk region, the local coordination center installed by Moscow announced on Wednesday, according to CNN.
The center said on its Telegram messaging channel that the bombing hit a poultry farm.
Moscow controls almost all of Ukraine’s Lugansk region.
There was no immediate response from Ukraine, but Kiev almost never publicly claims responsibility for attacks from inside Russia and from Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine, Reuters notes, according to Agerpres. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the 15-month war launched by Russia in February 2022.
Among other things, Agence France Presse reports that one person was killed and two others were wounded Tuesday in a Ukrainian bombing of a center for displaced persons in the border region of Belgorod, Governor Viacheslav Gladkov announced.
“Ukrainian armed forces fired artillery at a center for displaced persons that houses elderly civilians and children (…). A security guard was killed and two people injured,” Gladkov said on Telegram.
According to him, the two injured are “in serious condition in intensive care”, one with penetrating injuries to the abdomen, the other to the chest. Gladkov added to the message photos of a damaged building with broken windows, an impact pit near the security guard’s cabin, and adults and children about to be evacuated on buses.
The Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian bombings, as well as attempted incursions by armed groups from Ukraine, AFP recalls.
Fire at an oil refinery in Russia, possibly caused by a drone attack
UPDATE 08:20 A fire at an oil refinery in the Russian territory of Krasnodar was extinguished after a possible drone attack, according to the governor of Krasnodar, Veniamin Kondratiev, reports CNN, according to News.ro.
The fire was reported at the Afipsky refinery in the Seversky district and no casualties were reported, Kondratiev said on Telegram early Wednesday morning.
One of the fuel oil distillation units caught fire, he added. The governor specified that “firemen, MES and emergency services” are working to put out the fire. One of the hypotheses considered is that the fire may have been caused by a drone attack.
Zelensky wants to open an ammunition and repair factory in Ukraine
UPDATE 08:10 Kyiv is in discussions with representatives of the British arms company BAE Systems to open a factory in Ukraine for the production and repair of a diverse range of armaments, from tanks to artillery, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday evening, according to News.ro. He also said that during the day he discussed with Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, about the air defense of Ukraine, but also about the coordination of positions before important international events where Berlin’s voice can be “decisive”.
“I spoke with the representatives of the powerful British defense company BAE Systems. This is a truly large-scale weapons manufacturer – the weapons we need now and will need in the future to ensure the security of our country and the entire region,” Volodymyr Zelensky announced in his address to the nation on Tuesday evening .
“We are working to create an adequate base for production and repair in Ukraine. We are talking about a wide range of weapons: from tanks to artillery. We will offer Ukraine, and therefore all of Europe, this new power base”, the Ukrainian president told his compatriots.
Zelenskiy emphasized that Ukraine aims in the discussions with international partners in particular to strengthen the air defense. “Russian terror must be defeated every day and every night, in every region of Ukraine, in the skies of every Ukrainian city and village. When every attack by Russian terrorists will end in a failure for the terrorists, their defeats will become a source of our security – long-term security”, the leader from Kiev pointed out.
He announced that he spoke about air defense with Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor. “I thanked him for the air defense systems already provided to Ukraine, that is, for the lives of our people already saved by Germany. We discussed the defense situation in general and our cooperation in the field of security”, explained Zelenski at the end of a day in which Russia attacked Kiev again, massively, with missiles and drones, for the third day in a row.
“Before some important international events, which will take place very soon, we reach common positions and common decisions,” Zelenskiy said, most likely referring to the EU and NATO summits this summer, from which Ukraine expects favorable decisions for its ambitions of Euro-Atlantic integration. “I thank Olaf, Mr. Chancellor, for his personal determination, which in many ways becomes the determination of the whole of Europe,” Zelenski pointed out, emphasizing Germany’s role as the “engine” of Europe.
Russia blames Washington for drone attack in Moscow. “This is an encouragement to Ukrainian terrorists”
UPDATE 08:00 Washington is encouraging Kiev by ignoring the drone attack that hit several districts of Moscow on Tuesday, the Russian ambassador to the United States said on Tuesday, Reuters reports on Wednesday. Vladimir Putin blamed Ukraine for Tuesday’s airstrikes, but Kiev denied it was behind the strikes, saying it was “watching with pleasure”.
The White House has said it does not support attacks inside Russia and is still gathering information about the incident, which Putin has called an attempt to scare and provoke Moscow. “What are these attempts to hide behind the phrase that they are “gathering information”?” asked Ambassador Anatoli Antonov, in a post published on the Telegram messaging channel, according to Reuters, taken over by Agerpres.
“This is an encouragement to Ukrainian terrorists,” he added. Putin on Tuesday qualified the attack, which brought the 15-month war from Ukraine to the heart of Russia, as a terrorist act. Ukraine also accuses Russia of terrorism for the bombing of Ukrainian civilians, accusations rejected by Moscow.
