News culture “No guarantees” For HBO, season 3 of The Last of Us may never see the light of day
Among the big hits of the year, it is absolutely impossible not to mention the HBO series The Last of Us. After adapting the events of the first game, the eyes are now on those of the second, which could well require two seasons for some viewers. However, nothing is yet decided for a potential season 3…
Season 2 of The Last of Us, it will not be for now!
If HBO had already proven itself many times in the past, the American channel struck again in 2023 thanks to the series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us. While the latter was already enjoying a rich narrative worthy of the seventh art when it was released in 2013 on PlayStation 3, the video game from Naughty Dog studios was indeed able to benefit from a series adaptation on the same channel which produces the monuments that are Game of Thrones et Westworldto recite nobody else but them.
In the casting, we found there in particular Peter Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey in that of Ellie, a duo whose chemistry instantly burst onto the screen, for video game fans and new viewers alike. Building on its success, HBO did not wait long before formalizing the production of a second season which should return to the events of the second video game. However, if we do not yet have an official release date, we already know that you will have to wait before knowing the rest of the adventures of the duo of survivors.

Indeed, the progress of season 2 was put on hold by the famous strike of American screenwriters. The latter, initiated by the Writer’s Guild of America, follows fruitless negotiations with production studios. The screenwriters’ union has therefore been asking since the beginning of May for an increase in their salaries as well as more tangible guarantees to maintain a stable job in this area, which is currently very precarious. So a few days ago we were learning through Frances Bears (one of the people running HBO) that the target deadline for season 2 would be in the year 2025.

Season 3 in danger?
If you’ve played The Last of Us Part II, you know the story is even more detailed than in the first game. While the first season of The Last of Us could even afford to take the time to add a few elements to expand its content, the second may well have the opposite problem. An observation that has led some people to wonder if the game’s storyline should not be spread over two different seasons, which would imply the existence of a third season. However, Frances Bears recently made a point of clarifying HBO’s plan for the continuation of the series:
I believe that Craig (Mazin) and Neil (Druckmann, the creators of the series, Editor’s note) are still thinking about what they will do for the end. We have sometimes heard that there are ideas to do a season 3, but at the moment we are only thinking about one season at a time. There is no guarantee right now that there will be a season 3 but I know they both have a vision for a season 3. Will that lead to us doing more seasons, I do not know yet.

That the fans of the series therefore calm their ardor, for the moment, nothing is assured for a potential third season of The Last of Us. However, if the second season enjoys the same success as the first, it is far from impossible that a third will end up seeing the light of day. If you want such an event to become a reality, all you have to do is spread the word around you and watch The Last of Us over and over again.
