How King Charles was greeted by the villagers of Valea Zălanului
Friday, June 2, 2023, King Charles III arrived in Romania. It is his first visit abroad after his coronation. Despite the fact that the trip is not an official one, the monarch accepted the invitation of Klaus Iohannis, meeting with the head of state at the Cotroceni Palace.
After the reception, King Charles left for Valea Zălanului, where he has a property. He was greeted by several locals, the Romanians offering him simple gifts: bouquets of flowers – peonies and sânziens, which he received with open arms.
The monarch greeted and kissed every villager, even talked to the little ones. At the entrance to his residence in the small Romanian village, he also greeted the representatives of the media – gestures that amaze precisely because of their naturalness and openness, a true example of normality which is, unfortunately, a rarity in our country.

25 years have passed since my first visit to this remarkable country
In the speech delivered at the Cotroceni Palace together with Klaus Iohannis, Charles III declared that he came to love Romania, its culture and art, heritage, history, landscapes and biodiversity. In Romanian, the British monarch said: “Country of glory, country of longing!”
“I cannot describe the pleasure I have visiting Romania once again, thank you, Mr. President, for your kind words and for the immense generosity you showed by organizing this reception. 25 years have passed since my first visit to this remarkable country and when I came here I felt a deep connection with Romania.
My father was King Mihai’s cousin and I had memories of our shared childhood here, and I can say that I always felt at home in Romania.
I thus had the opportunity to witness first-hand the extraordinary development that has taken place and which is, I can say, a testimony to your energy, innovation and resilience. I met and was impressed by the representatives of the young generation, entrepreneurs, young that face the challenges of the modern world, in all fields, from technology, ecotourism or environmental protection, in the construction of environmentally friendly buildings” said King Charles, at the Cotroceni Palace.
