Game News For less than a subway ticket, go back to the origins of one of the legendary video game sagas with The Witcher: Enhanced Edition 18/20
Every saga has a beginning and today, JV invites you to dive back into one of the most cult licenses in video games: The Witcher.
You all know The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt by heart. But have you ever played the first title in the series? It must be said that the game is starting to get old: it will celebrate its 16th birthday this year. Soberly titled The Witcher, this action-RPG from CD Projekt is downright the first game developed by the studio. It was released exclusively on PC in 2007 (a console version of the game was planned for the year 2009 but was completely abandoned). If you’ve never done it, now might be the time to finally touch it. Yes, The Witcher is currently discounted on the platform GOG on the occasion of the “Summer Sale”, which lasts until July 3. So you can get it for the modest sum of… €1.19. If that’s not enough to convince you, know that the game only takes up 9 gigs of disk space. Cheap and not heavy the bugger.

The Witcher tells the story of Geralt De Riv, a Witcher, a man with supernatural powers and above normal physiology. At the start of the game, your character wakes up after being missing for 5 years. He suffers from amnesia, he no longer knows who he is and he finds himself in Kaer Morhen, the Witchers’ bastion. Throughout your adventure, you will be helped by your friends to recover your memory but also to find the magician Azar Javed who stole the secrets of your fellows. The game takes place in the northern kingdom of Temeria, which includes quite a bit of political intrigue that will lead you to know what it really means to be a Witcher.
The Witcher first name, solid foundations
It must be admitted, if today the graphics of this first The Witcher have not necessarily aged well, as well as the combat system, this first part, based on the literary universe of Andrzej Sapkowski, was fundamental for the success of the series in the world of video games. The title introduced us to characters who will follow us in the other two opuses – like Zoltan, Vesemir, Lambert or even Triss Merigold. The game also set up storylines that will find their climax in the two sequels. We can cite all the discrimination around Witchers or Magicians, for example. Above all, The Witcher has installed a choice system that will irreparably impact our relationships with other characters in future games. Throughout the first opus, we will have to constantly choose between following the Scoia’tael faction or that of the Burning Rose. The Witcher forged the success of CD Projekt, a game that can be considered a “draft” as it allowed the other two opuses to express themselves.
