Because your PIN is only four digits long, there are a total of 10,000 different combinations that cybercriminals can use to rob you of your savings. Even if they are difficult to take manually, artificial intelligence can find the correct answer in just a few seconds.
A former data analyst at Facebook published a study conducted to find out which are the most used card PINs. The method is not exact because it used leaked data of passwords of only four digits and not PIN codes.
However, the research can give a rough idea of the security that PIN codes provide. Thus, it was found that almost 11% of the 3.4 million passwords selected are the combination “1234” and more than 1 in 4 credit card passwords could be guessed by trying 20 different combinations. The most common combinations are: “1234”, “1111”, “0000”, “7777”, “1004”, “2000”, “4444”, “2222” and “6969”.
How to find the perfect PIN
So repeating the same digit is not really the best idea to set your PIN. It’s not an easy task to find a super safe combination either, because if you choose a birthday there are only 12 ways the PIN can end up, for example.
The best way is to use random combinations like “8068”. If you intend to change your card PIN it is recommended to stay away from obvious patterns. Don’t use repeated numbers and of course never tell anyone your PIN. And the most important thing is to remember the PIN you just set for your card.
