The death toll has increased after yesterday’s train accident in Pakistan. 30 people died and 100 were injured in the south of the country after the train derailed. It is not yet known what happened, but the authorities announced that the train had not exceeded the legal speed.
Uninjured passengers struggled for an hour to remove the injured from the carriages before the first rescue teams arrived. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, which declared a state of emergency. The rescue mission continues Monday morning.
Several images posted on social media showed dozens of people at the scene of the accident, with some passengers managing to get out of the overturned carriages on their own. A passenger told the BBC he saw many women and children lying on the ground.
“They were yelling and screaming. I didn’t know what to do. I took fistfuls of water from this nearby canal and splashed the unconscious people on their faces, hoping they would regain consciousness,” Naseer Ahmed said.

Nasser said he survived the crash because he “fell from the window when the train derailed.”
Aslam, who was on the train with his son, said he was sleeping when the carriage overturned: “[S-a simțit ca] an apocalypse”.
Railways Minister Saad Rafiq said initial investigations showed the train was traveling at normal speed and they were trying to determine what caused the derailment. It’s running on two tracks – the result of mechanical failure or sabotage, he added.
Authorities dismissed reports that the railway line had been flooded. A Karachi Railways spokesman said at least eight carriages derailed.
He said military troops along with rescuers rushed to the spot and helped rescue the passengers trapped in the train carriages.
Rail accidents are common in Pakistan, especially due to the aging infrastructure. Between 2013 and 2019, 150 people died in such accidents.
