The 4 secrets of a neurologist who, at 101 years old, still goes to work
Dr. Howard Tucker turned 101 a few weeks ago. He currently works at several hospitals and clinics in Cleveland, USA. He has been married for 66 years, his wife, a psychiatrist, was even his student. The two have four children and ten grandchildren together.
Invited to “The Mindbodygreen Podcast”, the neurologist talked about the four secrets of longevity. The list includes quality time spent with family, productivity, a balanced lifestyle that includes exercise, and the fact that he has stayed away from cigarettes his whole life.
He also says his genetics likely play a role in his prolonged cognitive health and clarity, adding that his father used to drive himself to dinner every night at age 95 after Tucker’s mother he died.
“Genetics is an advantage, but not more than that,” he told the podcast host.
Research has suggested that incorporating healthy daily habits could add up to 20 years to our lives. Such habits include exercise, getting enough sleep, positive relationships, and eating healthy foods.

“Doctors are not infallible”
Tucker believes that what is known as biohacking, which includes taking supplements and having monthly blood tests, MRIs and colonoscopies, is not the answer to a long life because medical research is constantly changing what we think is good for us.
“Doctors are not infallible,” he said, citing doctors who recommended smoking for weight loss and “to calm the nerves” in the 1930s and 1940s.
So, the four secrets of the neurologist who still goes to work at 101 are:
- Don’t retire from work entirely: “I think retirement is the enemy of longevity,” he said.
- Keep your soul young: “I have good friends who are in their 70s and 80s and they keep me young,” said the centenarian.
- Stay active: “I used to run outdoors, but now it’s almost impossible to do that anymore, so I started using the treadmill. I run three kilometers, two or three times a week.
- Be surrounded by love.
