Earthquake in Turkey. What magnitude was the earthquake?
A strong earthquake occurred on Thursday in eastern Turkey, in the same area devastated by earthquakes in the past.
According to information from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (CSEM-EMSC), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale.
What time did the earthquake occur?
The earthquake happened at 20:48 local time, and the epicenter was the Celikhan area (Yeşilyurt district) and occurred 10 kilometers from the city of Malatya (441,000 inhabitants) and 131 kilometers from the city of Şanlıurfa (449,000 inhabitants), according to the event map.
The strong earthquake was felt in Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, Elazığ, Kahramanmaraş and Gaziantep, reports CNN Türk.
“I will inform you about the earthquakes that occurred today: First, there was the Öncü-Yeşilyurt earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 in Malatya, and then the İkizce-Yesilyurt earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2. It is very likely that the Öncü earthquake is the precursor of the İkizce earthquake”, stated Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, an expert in seismology.

No deaths were recorded
Even though it was a strong earthquake that leveled several buildings, no one died, with the Turkish authorities announcing that only people were injured.
“Following the earthquake that occurred in Yesilyurt district of Malatya province at 20:48 with a magnitude of 5.3, all the teams of our relevant institutions, especially AFAD, have started the ground scanning work,” he said on his page social the Turkish Minister of the Interior, Ali Yerlikaya.
