The journey to the spectacular place, located only 90 km from Bucharest, is only 1 hour and 55 minutes (that is, if we don’t run into traffic and congestion), and we are heading to the Ruse customs.
Once we enter the city from the Danube, Ruse, we still have about 11.5 km to go, in about 16 minutes, and the road is signposted as such, so we don’t get lost on the route.

After another 11 km, we reach the spectacular place, located only 90 km from Bucharest, known as Rusenski Lom.
The place harbors a rich variety of forest and agricultural biotopes, in addition to dreamy landscapes and a striking resemblance to Cappadocia, the famous region of Turkey.
As a location, the Rusenski Lom region is located in northeastern Bulgaria, in the canyon-like valley of the Lom River, the last major right-bank tributary of the Danube before it flows into the Black Sea.
According to the Bulgarian authorities, Rusenski Lom is a protected area covering territories in Vetovo, Ivanovo and Tsar Kaloyan communes.

The Rusenki Lom Nature Park, together with the wider area of the Lom rivers, is home to a rich variety of habitats.
From meandering rivers, small natural lakes and fish ponds, riverside terraces with wet meadows, alluvial forests, high vertical cliffs, semi-natural dry meadows, rocky steppe meadows, dry brambles and up to oak forests on dry soils and rocky, among others.
The variety of habitats and climatic conditions contribute to a high diversity of flora and fauna.
The flora of the park numbers 877 species, 23% of the flora of Bulgaria, including 30 endemic species from the Balkans and one endemic Bulgarian species. Nine species of the orchid family can be found in the park.

Rusenski Lom is one of the top birding sites in Bulgaria, and 122 out of a total of 174 species breed in the park.
Some of the birds are endangered in Europe and are under the protection of Bulgaria and the EU.

This nature park covers a large area along the rivers Beli and Cherni Lom, which merge into the river Rusenski Lom.

We are talking, therefore, of the rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo, the cave monastery of Basarbovo, the medieval fortress-city of Cherven, the cave “Orlova Chuka”, a lot of rock churches and monasteries in the rock ridges along the rivers, etc.
There are also a lot of hiking and ecological trails that do not require special training or a certain level of physical fitness. These are well marked and do not require a guide.
They usually start either from nearby villages, you can find wayfinding signs before entering the villages or their central markets, or from tourist spots.
If you prefer the serenity of the countryside, you can stay at one of the many guest houses and small family hotels in most villages.
