The place harbors a rich variety of forest and agricultural biotopes, in addition to dreamy landscapes and a striking resemblance to Cappadocia, the famous region of Turkey.
As a location, the Rusenski Lom region is located in northeastern Bulgaria, in the canyon-like valley of the Lom River, the last major right-bank tributary of the Danube before it flows into the Black Sea.
According to the Bulgarian authorities, Rusenski Lom is a protected area covering territories in Vetovo, Ivanovo and Tsar Kaloyan communes.

The Rusenki Lom Nature Park, together with the wider area of the Lom rivers, is home to a rich variety of habitats.
From meandering rivers, small natural lakes and fish ponds, riverside terraces with wet meadows, alluvial forests, high vertical cliffs, semi-natural dry meadows, rocky steppe meadows, dry brambles and up to oak forests on dry soils and rocky, among others.

The variety of habitats and climatic conditions contribute to a high diversity of flora and fauna.
The flora of the park numbers 877 species, 23% of the flora of Bulgaria, including 30 endemic species from the Balkans and one endemic Bulgarian species. Nine species of the orchid family can be found in the park.

Rusenski Lom is one of the top birding sites in Bulgaria, and 122 out of a total of 174 species breed in the park.
