There are certain people who mark an era, and Panos Panay was one of them. After 19 years at Microsoft, the head of Windows and Microsoft devices is leaving to go to a big competitor, Amazon.
He leaves Microsoft for Amazon
After 19 incredible years at Microsoft, I decided to turn the page and write the next chapter. I will be forever grateful for my time at Microsoft and the amazing people I had the honor of building products with.
Panos Panay has had the opportunity to do several jobs since joining Microsoft in 2004, but the man was best known for overseeing the launch of new products, including Surface computers and the dual-screen Surface Duo phone.
Always cheerful at the idea of launching new objects, Panos Panay was one of those who knew how to inspire and whose enthusiasm was infectious. His departure was not planned since his presence was still confirmed last month when he confirmed his presence at the Microsoft event scheduled for this Thursday, September 21 and which should discuss the Surface range and the company’s AI innovations.
Yusuf Mehdi will take over responsibility for Microsoft’s Windows and Surface businesses. He should have plenty to do since if the rumors are true, Windows 12 would be planned for next year.
As for Panos Panay, Bloomberg says he is joining Amazon’s teams to take care of Alexa devices and Echo smart speakers. It will therefore remain in the world of devices, but for one of Microsoft’s biggest competitors.
Coincidence of the calendar or not, Amazon will hold an event this Wednesday, one day before Microsoft, dedicated to the firm’s new devices. We do not know if Panos Panay will be there, but it is David Limp, head of the branch, who will make way for Panos Panay when the latter officially takes up his duties.
The Devices and Services team has already had a very busy year, and now that Amazon HQ2 is officially open, it seems only right to gather there in a few months to share a little more of what we’ve been working on. Mark your calendar for 09/20 to hear from us!
