News culture After 3 years of conflict, Netflix finally overcomes its problems regarding Squid Game
Shortly after the release of Squid Game, Netflix and one of the South Korean companies went to war. It took them three years to see the end of the story.
Since 2021, Netflix and SK Broadband have been engaged in a legal battle. It is one of the largest Internet service providers in South Korea, and it has decided to pursue the streaming platform. The reason ? The Korean company wanted Netflix to help cover expenses related to increasing the number of viewers on its content– generated, among others, by Squid Game. The decision came after a Seoul court said the U.S. company had to give something for use of the Korean network. After three years, the story finally concludes with a partnership between the two companies. Tony Zameczkowski, Netflix’s vice president of partnerships, notably declared :
The partnership with SK Telecom, a leader in Korea’s telecommunications and innovative technology industries, is of particular significance as it allows Netflix to enhance entertainment experiences for a broader Korean audience.
Choi Hwanseok, vice president of SK Telecom (a subsidiary of SK Broadband), also spoke about this partnership. According to him, this “stems from the philosophy of SK Telecom and SK Broadband, which prioritizes added value for the customer, and as part of our efforts to offer our customers an enhanced media service environment”.

A season 2 for Squid Game soon?
As a reminder, Squid Game is a 2021 South Korean series. Its plot follows several people – and more particularly Seong Gi-hun – who participate in a deadly game to win more than 38 million US dollars. During this event, they must participate in several events reminiscent of games from our childhood and if they fail, they die. A season 2 has been awaited by fans for a long time. Filming of this TV show began in July 2023 and should end in 2024. The series is therefore expected for 2025. The synopsis of the next episodes has not been revealed, we only know that certain characters will return. Spectators will therefore be able to see Lee Jung-jae again in the main role. Lee Byung-Hun and Wi Ha-joon will also be there to play Hwang In-ho and his younger brother, respectively.
