The validity of the driver’s license may increase. The parliamentarians want to increase the period of these documents from the current 10 years to 15 years. For the elderly, however, there is bad news. They should renew their driver’s license every five years, and those over 80 every two years. This is so that they are medically evaluated more often.
The new legislative proposal comes with a series of changes, and all drivers are targeted. Those who are up to 70 years old will be exempted from going to the Department of Permits every ten years, if the period of validity of the document will increase to 15 years.
However, elderly drivers receive a real blow. Those over the age of 70 will have to change their driver’s license every five years, while drivers over 80 should change their license every two years.
Daciana Toma, family doctor: As we get older, all kinds of ailments appear whether we like it or not. All kinds of changes occur. About diseases, because we are talking about diseases. Then the assessment is necessary to see: does the patient have certain diseases, does he not, what is happening, has he kept his ability to drive?
The initiators of the project believe that these measures will lead to a reduction in traffic incidents. However, official data show that only 6% of accidents in Romania involved drivers over 70 years old.
To be implemented, the project must first be approved and then published in the Official Gazette.
