WhatsApp has announced upcoming changes to chat history backup on Android.
WhatsApp makes changes to messages
WhatsApp backups on Android will soon start counting towards your Google Account cloud storage limit, similar to how per-app backups are handled on other mobile platforms, Google has announced. This change will first start rolling out to WhatsApp Beta users from December 2023, then gradually to all WhatsApp users on Android starting early next year.
If you choose to enable WhatsApp backups on Android, personal Google accounts come with 15GB of free storage space – three times more than most mobile platforms – which is shared across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos.
WhatsApp backups on Android will continue to work as long as you have space available in your Google Account storage. If you reach your storage limit, you’ll need to free up space to resume backups by removing items you don’t need.

What Google says
If you have a personal Google Account, storage management tools can help you do things like delete large files or photos. You can also delete items directly from WhatsApp. Deleting articles on WhatsApp deletes them from cloud storage, reducing the storage space used by the next WhatsApp backup. You also have the option to get more storage with Google One.
Google says that to help you with the transition, it will soon offer limited and one-time promotions, Google One, to eligible users. If you have a Google Workspace subscription at work or school, your storage quota is not affected at this time.
Going forward, the WhatsApp backup experience on Android will be consistent with how it works on other platforms, with the added benefit of Google’s 15GB storage space available for free. The giant says it will continue to work with WhatsApp to provide us with safe and secure backup support.
